MACEDON. Olynthos. Circa 500 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 17.29 g, 1 h). Bearded charioteer, holding whip in his upraised right hand and the reins in his left, driving a quadriga walking to right; above the horses, large pellet . Rev. Eagle flying to left within a shallow incuse square surrounded by a thick, rough square concentric border, diagonally divided; all within a large and shallow incuse square. Asyut 212. Cahn, Olynthus, Type B. SNG ANS 463. SNG Lockett 1377. Rare and attractively toned. Usual slightly rough surfaces, otherwise, very fine.

From the Collection of Jonathan H. Kagan, ex Künker 158, 28 September 2009, 156, Leu Numismatics 79, 31 October 2000, 493 and Hess-Leu 28, 5 May 1965, 141.

It is thought that the earliest coinage of Olynthos served as the inspiration for the first coinage of Syracuse. This was presumably due to the export of northern Greek silver to Sicily in the form of coins.
