The fifth anniversary of the restoration of monarchy was to be celebrated on 25 November 1940. However, less than a month before, on the 28th October 1940, Mussolini declared war and the Italians began their disastrously incompetent attempt to invade Greece through the mountains of Epirus. In this turbulent period the Greek State's original order for the production of 2000 these coins was reduced to only 500 pieces.
