KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III 'the Great', 336-323 BC. Stater (Gold, 18 mm, 8.61 g, 12 h), struck under Seleukos I, Babylon, circa 311-300. Head of Athena to right, wearing triple-crested Corinthian helmet adorned with coiled snake on the bowl, pendant earring and pearl necklace. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Nike standing left with spread wings, holding a laurel wreath in her right hand and stylis in her left; to left, ΜΙ; to right, monogram of ΜΥΡ within wreath. Price 3748. SC 81.2. Beautifully struck from fresh dies; sharp and well centered. Virtually as struck.

This piece was struck under Selelukos I at his then main mint of Babylon. Both the quality of the die engraving and that of the striking process was remarkably high there; the gold staters struck at Babylon and those struck under the Ptolemies at Memphis are the stylistically finest of all those minted in the name of Alexander.
