THRACE. Ainos. Circa 360/350 BCE. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 15.37 g, 12 h). Head of Hermes facing, wearing petasos and turned slightly to the left. Rev. AINION Goat standing right; at his feet, vertical thunderbolt. May, Ainos, -. Nomos 7, 2013, 21 (same reverse die). Extremely rare, only the second example known. With a powerful, fully frontal head of Hermes. Good very fine.

As has been noted for the Nomos example cited above, this issue must either have been struck just before or just after May's Group LXIV, the last major series of tetradrachms minted at Ainos. The thunderbolt symbol suggests a close connection with the eagle symbol of Group LXIV and the features of Hermes' head are not unlike those found on the drachms of this and subsequent groups. Although the reverse die is the same as that used for the other specimen of this tetradrachm issue, the obverse depicts Hermes facing frontally, without the usual slight turn of the head to the left.
