SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysios I, 405-367 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25.5 mm, 17.13 g, 4 h), unsigned, but struck from dies prepared by Eukleidas, circa 405-395 . Bearded charioteer, holding the reins in both hands and the kentron in his right, driving a quadriga rushing to left, about to turn, the head of third horse turned back to right; above, Nike flying right to crown the driver; in exergue, barley ear. Rev. ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙ-Ω-Ν Head of Arethusa to left, wearing ampyx and sphendone, double-spiral earring and simple necklace with a large pearl pendant; in the field to left, three dolphins, two swimming downwards and one upwards; to right, behind Arethusa's neck, dolphin swimming downwards. Dewing 849 (same dies). Fischer-Bossert/Tudeer 82 (O30/R55). HGC 2, 1342. Jameson 1923 (same dies). SNG ANS 290 (same dies). Of good, late 5th century style with a sedate head of Arethusa. Scattered marks and struck from a somewhat worn obverse die, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
