SICILY. Katane. Circa 450-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 29 mm, 16.89 g, 3 h), 450-445. Male charioteer wearing a long chiton and holding a goad in his right hand and the reins in both, driving a walking quadriga to right. Rev. KATANAION Laureate head of Apollo to right. Dewing 584 (same dies). W. Giesecke, Sicilia numismatica, pl. IV.4 (this coin). Gulbenkian 180 (same dies). Rizzo pl. X, 12 (same reverse die). SNG ANS 1241-2 (same obverse die). SNG Lloyd 893 (same obverse die). Beautifully toned and sharply struck on a broad flan, a superb coin of excellent early Classical style. Extremely fine.
