SICILY. Gela. Circa 406 BC. Litra (Gold, 9.5 mm, 0.87 g, 2 h). Forepart of bridled horse to right. Rev. ΣΩΣΙΠΟΛΙΣ Female head to left, hair in ampyx, wearing single-pendant earring and necklace. HGC 2, 336 (same dies). Jameson 590 (this coin) = Jenkins, Gela, Group IX, 491.1 (O102/R198). Rizzo pl. XIX, 9. SNG Lloyd 980 (same dies). Extremely rare. One of only four specimens known to Jenkins. Scattered marks and scratches, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From a European collection and from that of J. A. Ferrendelli, Triton VII, 12 January 2004, 46, ex Numismatica Ars Classica 9, 16 April 1996, 156, and from the collections of R. Jameson and Sir A. J. Evans, apparently found in a vineyard outside of Gela in the late 19th century.
