LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 340-330 BC. Nomos (Silver, 20 mm, 7.82 g). Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. [M]ET[A] Six-grained barley ear with leaf to left; to left, above and below leaf, Π-PO. De Luynes 471. HGC 1, 1059 (this coin illustrated). HN III 1560. Johnston Class A, 6.1. Possibly the finest example known of this rare issue, with beautiful iridescent toning. Minor marks, otherwise, extremely fine.

From a European collection, ex Roma 4, 30 September 2012, 18 and from the Prospero Collection, The New York Sale 27, 4 January 2012, 79, ex Bank Leu 48, 10 May 1989, 19.

This is a very impressive and attractive head of an idealised and youthful Herakles - rather reminiscent of those on tetradrachms from late 5th century Kamarina.
