CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 240-228 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 20.5 mm, 6.50 g, 1 h), struck under the magistrate Xenokrates. Armoured military leader, riding a horse moving slowly to left, raising his right hand in salute and turning his bearded and laureate head to face the viewer; in theupper field to right, monogram and pileus; below horse, ΞΕ-ΝΟΚΡΑ/Τ-ΗΣ. Rev. [Τ]ΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos, nude, riding dolphin to left, his body turned slightly back to right and his head facing the viewer, holding a trident over his right shoulder in his right hand and holding his drapery in his upraised left; to right, monogram of ΣΩ; below, waves and, barely visible to right, a cuttlefish. HN III 1058. SNG ANS 1258. Vlasto 955-958. With a well-nigh realistic portrait on the obverse and a very unusual portrayal of Phalanthos on the reverse: their facing heads echo each other. Some soft striking on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.
