CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 240-228 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 21 mm, 6.55 g, 10 h), struck under the magistrates Zopyrion, So.. and Ep... Young man, wearing a tunic and leaning back with his head facing front, riding a horse springing to right, holding the horse's mane with his left hand and the reins with his right; below right, bucranium with the letters ΣΩ between its horns; below, on the exergual line, ΖΩΠΥΡΙΩΝ. Rev. Τ - ΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos, nude, riding dolphin to left, holding a hippocamp in his right hand and a trident with his left; in the field to right, head of Pan to left; above the dolphin's back, monogram of ΕΠ. HN III 1054. SNG ANS 1246. Vlasto 940-941. Well-centered and attractive. Extremely fine.

What, exactly, is the rider doing, turning his face out to his right? Presumably some form of rodeo-like acrobatics - or could he be looking for some special person in the audience? In addition, if you look carefully there seems to be something unusual on the horse's left hind leg - could it be a too cleverly hidden signature??
