SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Hemilitron (Bronze, 15.5 mm, 4.15 g, 3 h), by the engraver Phrygillos but unsigned, circa 410-405. Head of Arethusa to left, her hair bound in a sphendone. Rev. ΣΥ - ΡΑ Wheel of four spokes, with the legend in the upper quarters and a pair of opposed dolphins in the lower. Calciati 19 fr4/7. HGC 2, 1479. SNG ANS 411. A superbly attractive piece with a delicate and serene head of Arethusa. Perfectly centered, well-struck and with a fine black-green patina. Reverse die slightly filled in the legend, otherwise, extremely fine.
