SICILY. Segesta. Circa 465/60-455/50 BC. Litra (Silver, 11 mm, 0.71 g, 3 h). ΣΕΓΕΣΤΑ𐊈ΙΒ Facing head of the nymph Segesta, her long hair falling down the sides of her head. Rev. Hound at bay to right; above, omphalos phiale - 'solar wheel'. Buceti 19. SNG ANS 648 var. SNG Copenhagen 581 var. Rare. Attractive and well-centered with a dark patina as found. Good very fine.

From the Dr. Paul Peter Urone Collection, ex Numismatica Ars Classica N, 26 June 2003, 1143.

Most known examples of this type show the hound standing with straight legs, rather than, as here, with the legs slanted in the at bay posture. In addition, the symbol in the field above is usually very much more wheel-like, with four or six spokes; as compared with the ten seen here, which seem to turn the wheel symbol into a ridged omphalos phiale!
