SICILY. Panormus. 2nd century BC. As (Bronze, 21.5 mm, 5.74 g, 12 h), coins of this type have also been attributed to Lilybaion, struck under an uncertain magistrate - see the note below, circa 200-190. Laureate and bearded head of Janus; border of dots. Rev. Monogram of APL (?) within a laurel wreath tied at the bottom and with a rosette at the top. Buceti 167. Calciati 83. HGC 2, 1690. A superb example: sharply struck, well centered and with a lovely dark brown patina. Extremely fine.

From the Dr. Paul Peter Urone Collection, ex Leu Numismatics 83, 6 May 2002, 75.

This coin forms part of a considerable series of similar pieces, all with differing magistrates' names/initials/symbols on their reverses. All of these were, presumably, quaestors. Among the most readable are Man. Acilius; Q. Ani...; Naso; Crassipes; et al.
