SICILY. Akragas. Circa 338-317 BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 13 mm, 1.66 g, 3 h). Μ Crab. Rev. Free horse prancing to right on groundline; above, star of eight rays. Buceti 183. Gorini, pour Denyse, 2 (same dies). HGC 3, 108 (this coin). SNG ANS 1109. Very rare. Toned. Good very fine.

From the Dr. Paul Peter Urone Collection and from the collection of A. D. Moretti, Numismatica Ars Classica P, 12 May 2005, 1146.

This coin is generally viewed as being an issue of Akragas from the third quarter of the 4th century BC. The curious appearance of the letter Μ on the obverse has, however, led some to suggest that it is actually from Motya, a city well known for its eclectic borrowing of coin types from its neighbours. No real proof as been adduced for this attribution so we have kept it as Akragas.
