Lot 1052

BRUTTIUM. Kroton. Circa 400-350 BC. 1/3 Stater (Silver, 15.5 mm, 2.15 g, 5 h). Horse, with trailing reins, galloping to right on ground line. Rev. ΚΡΟ Winged thunderbolt; to left, tripod on a simple square altar. Apparently unpublished save for its auction appearances. Unique. Well-struck, toned and attractive. Extremely fine.

From the Dr. Paul Peter Urone Collection, ex Leu Numismatics 83, 6 May 2002, 40 and Numismatica Ars Classica 7, 1 March 1994, 174.

This extraordinary coin has been previously dated to c. 380-376 (NAC) and c. 330 (Leu). While the Leu cataloguer had a point (as he usually did) comparing the horse to those on Siculo-Punic tetradrachms of the late 4th century, the NAC cataloguer had a point too. In any case, the present piece simply must be connected with the following lot, the Krotoniate triobol that also has a vertical thunderbolt.

Note from cataloguer II: Alan weren't you the Leu cataloguer?
