KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 16.94 g 12), Probably Antioch in Caria, but possibly from Tabai, c. 190-170. Head of Herakles in lion skin headdress to right. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus seated left on backless throne, holding eagle in his right hand and scepter in his left; to left, thyrsos above humped-back bull to left, with head facing . Price 2470. Very rare. About extremely fine.

From a European collection.

This coin has been attributed to Antioch in Caria because the humped bull also appears on the city’s autonomous issues. However, it lacks the maeander pattern that usually appears on Antioch’s coins, and Price has suggested that it might, alternatively, have been struck in Tabae.
