CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 325-280 BC. Diobol (Silver, 12 mm, 1.09 g, 12 h). Head of Athena to right, wearing Attic helmet decorated with Skylla hurling a stone. Rev. Herakles kneeling on both knees to right, his feet together, strangling the Nemean lion; on the left, [club]; on the upper right, cicada to left. Diobols, Series G, Type 179. HN III 976. SNG ANS 1422. SNG Copenhagen 979-980. Vlasto 1327-1329. With a very well-centered reverse and lovely deep toning. Nearly extremely fine.

From the "Collection sans Pareille" of Ancient Greek Fractions, ex Sternberg XXI, 14 November 1988, 8.

The diobols of Tarentum with Herakles fighting the Nemean lion depict Herakles in a number of poses: in some cases he is standing, seemingly lifting the lion off the ground; in others he is kneeling, most commonly with one knee and that foot's toes on the ground, and with his other knee bent and that foot flat on the ground; but in some his legs are together with both knees and the toes of both feet on the ground.
