THRACE. Maroneia. Circa 398/7-386/5 BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 7 mm, 0.32 g, 6 h). Facing head of a Gorgon with extended tongue. Rev. Crested helmet to right; all within an incuse square. Apparently unpublished save for its auction appearances, see LHS 100, 2007, 197 (this coin) and CNG e358, 2015, 29 = CNG 78, 2008, 305 (same dies. Very rare. Clear and attractive with a dark patina. About extremely fine.

From the "Collection sans Pareille" of Ancient Greek Fractions, ex LHS 100, 23 April 2007, 197.

This coin was unknown prior to its appearance in LHS 100; then, a year later, another example, from the same dies, turned up in CNG 78. While the LHS cataloguer attributed this piece to Maroneia, because of the close similarity of the obverse to obols from there, the CNG cataloguer termed their piece as Thraco-Macedonian uncertain because it bears a helmet rather than a bunch of grapes, the usual type for Maroneia.
