IONIA. Uncertain mint. Circa 550-525 BC. Stater (Electrum, 21 mm, 14.35 g), Lydo-Milesian standard. Forepart of bridled horse to left; rosette at breast, floral symbol (lotus?) at nape of the neck. Rev. Rectangular punch between two square punches all with irregular surfaces. ACGC 56. Fischer-Bossert, Horses, Series I, 2o (dies H2/H1-H3). Konuk & Lorber fig. 7. SNG Kayhan 714 (same punches). Traité II, 1, 70 and pl. II, 24. Weidauer 138 (same dies). Extremely rare, and possibly the finest of the few pieces known. Some striking flatness, otherwise, extremely fine.
