KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III 'the Great', 336-323 BC. Drachm (Silver, 18 mm, 4.24 g, 11 h), Sardes, 323-319 . Head of youthful Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus seated to left on a backless throne, holding eagle on his outstretched right hand and long scepter in his left; in field to left, torch; below throne, monogram of Δ•. Price 2640. A lovely, toned example of fine style. The best known example of this very rare variation! Minor flan faults, otherwise, good extremely fine.
