SICILY. Katane. Circa 405-403/2 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 17.21 g, 3 h), signed by Herakleidas. [KATANAIΩΝ] Laureate head of Apollo facing, turned slightly to the left, his hair falling in loose curls around his face; in the field to right, here mostly off the flan and with only a few letters visible [ΗΡΑΚΛΕΙΔΑΣ]. Rev. Quadric galloping to left, driven by a charioteer holding the reins with both hands; above, Nike flying to right, holding a taenia and a wreath to crown the charioteer; in the exergue, fish swimming to left (but here off the flan). AMB 337 (same dies). Buceti 57a. Kraay&Hirmer pl. 15, 43 (same dies). Rizzo pl. XIV, 10 and XVI, 2 (same dies). Very rare. With a sympathetic and noble portrait of Apollo of superb quality. Metal fault on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine/very fine.
