SICILY. Katane. Circa 415/3-403/2 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 16.56 g, 5 h), struck from an obverse die signed by Herakleidas. Charioteer, holding goad in his right hand and reins in both, driving fast quadriga to left, passing the turn-post on his right; above, Nike flying right, crowning the charioteer with a wreath held in her extended right hand and the horses with a wreath held in her left; below triple exergual line, Η (but here off the flan). Rev. KATANAIΩN Head of Apollo to left, wearing tainia with his hair short, and not flowing at the back of his head. AMB 336 (same obverse die). Buceti - (but cf. 53). Cf. Kraay & Hirmer 40 (same obverse die). Mirone 57 (these dies). A very rare variety, the only late 5th century Apollo head with the hair cut short at the back of the neck. Boldly struck. Reverse slightly off-center, otherwise, good very fine.
