SICILY. Himera. Circa 440-430/25 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 22 mm, 8.68 g, 3 h). ΙΜΕΡΑΙΟΝ (retrograde, in the exergue) Nude youth, preparing to spring off a horse galloping to left, holding the horse's mane with his right hand and a goad with his left, his entire body on the left side of the horse. Rev. ΣΟΤΕΡ (retrograde, in the exergue) The nymph Himera, wearing a long chiton and himation, standing facing, turned slightly to the left, holding phiale in her right hand and raising her left; at her feet to left, flaming altar; above left, barley grain; at her feet to right, kerykeion entwined with a taenia. AMB 303 (same dies). Gutmann/Schwabacher 3 (same dies). Jameson 610 (same dies). Very rare. Of fine style, attractively toned and well-centered. Minor double-striking on the obverse, otherwise, good very fine.
