LYCIA. Xanthos. Time of Maussollos of Caria, circa 360 BC. Drachm (Silver, 17 mm, 3.84 g). Lion's head with open jaws to right. Rev. Α - Ρ - [Ξ] (= Lycian Arñna) Star of eight rays, with a letter in three of the angles. Cf. Peus 407, 2012, 806 = Peus 378, 204, 275 (a diobol, 1.60 g, of these types) and Peus e1, 2015, 44 (an obol, 0.76 g, of these types, from the same dies as the diobol). Extremely rare, possibly unique. A most interesting and historic coin. Toned. About extremely fine.

Ex Roma e-21, 31 October 2015, 200.

We would very much like to thank the well-known Turkish scholar, Koray Konuk, for providing the correct attribution for this coin: previously it was catalogued as being from Northern Greece (which is how it appears in the printed version of Auction 19). He supplied references for a diobol (Peus 407, 2012, 806) and an obol of the same type (Peus, e1, 2015, 44) both with the accompanying legend (unread in our original catalogue entry); in addition, the diobol in Peus 407 also appears as VIII, 61 in W. Müseler, Lykische Münzen, Istanbul 2016, and first turned up in Peus 378, 2004, 275, where its attribution to Maussollos was clearly explained. All the previous references and discussions that we supplied for this coin, suggesting a northern Greek origin for it, can be discarded.
