LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 290-280 BC. Nomos or Didrachm (Silver, 23 mm, 7.67 g, 10 h). ΔI Head of Demeter to right, wearing wreath of barley ears, triple-pendant earring and pearl necklace. Rev. ΜΕΤΑ Ear of barley of six grains and leaf to left; to left, above leaf, ornamented candelabrum; to left, below leaf, ⊢A; to right, long filleted thyrsos. HN III 1620. Johnston D3.9 (same dies). SNG ANS 508. Very nicely toned and attractive; the best available example of this rare variety. Minor area of flatness on the obverse, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
