MACEDON. Koinon of Macedon. Period of Severus Alexander, 222-235. Triassarion (Bronze, 27 mm, 11.55 g, 7 h), Beroea. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔ-ΡΟΥ Head of Alexander the Great to right, wearing crested neo-Attic helmet bearing an elaborate combat scene on the bowl: two cavalrymen are at the center, riding in opposed directions; on the center left, the mounted soldier rides to left and battles an enemy standing right; on the right, the mounted soldier rides to right and lances an enemy falling backwards to right. Rev. ΚΟΙΝΟ ΜΑΚΕΔΟΝΩΝ ΝΕΩ Alexander, in military dress, with his cloak flowing out behind him and his right hand raised in salute, riding a horse walking to right. Cf. AMNG 446 (same obverse die) and 407 (same reverse die). An interesting piece with an extraordinary figural group on Alexander's helmet. Dark patina. Good very fine.
From a German collection, acquired prior to 2005.
The battle group on Alexander's helmet is exceptional in its detail: despite the wear on this example it is still likely to be the best preserved example known.
