KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Hemistater (Gold, 13 mm, 4.31 g, 10 h), Miletus, c. 325-323. Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet decorated with a serpent; below neck truncation, thunderbolt. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Nike standing left, holding wreath in her right hand and stylis in her left; to left, monogram of ΔΗ. Price 2080 = Thompson Miletus I.16. Very rare. A lovely, well-struck and well-centered example. Extremely fine.

From a European collection.

The hemistaters of Alexander are quite astonishingly rare, and are missing from many major collections. The presence of a symbol on the obverse, the thunderbolt, makes this issue even more unusual since obverse symbols or letters only very rarely appear on Alexander's gold coins.
