Hammer Price:900 CHF
KINGS of THRACE. Skostokos, 260/55-245 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27mm, 17.03 g 12), Kabyle (?). Diademed head of Alexander the Great to right with horn of Ammon over his ear. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ Athena seated left on throne, resting her left elbow on her shield and holding Nike crowning the king’s name in her outstretched right hand; behind, transverse spear; in inner left field, globe on pillar. Fischer-Bossert, RBN 151 (2005), 20 (same dies, note the spear point that goes through the second Υ). Beautifully toned and unusually nice. Extremely fine.
From a Swiss collection, recorded in 1966.
This lovely coin comes from a series that can be securely ascribed to the obscure Thracian dynast Skostokos. The outstanding quality of this coin suggests that it should have a pedigree, very likely to a sale prior to World War II (but probably unillustrated since, otherwise, Fischer-Bossert would have found it).
