Charioteer, holding kentron in his right hand and reins in his left, driving biga to right. De la Tour 30 (but with a different obverse style). Scheers 77. Very rare and of unusually fine style. Tiny scratch on forehead, otherwise. About extremely fine.

Stylized horse to left with a fan-like checkerboard design above and a rosette below. CdB classe 1b. De la Tour 78. D&T I. 41. Very rare. With a bold and impressive head of very strong style, and a wonderful horse. Minor striking flatness, otherwise, about extremely fine.

Vlasto 1354 (same dies). Rare. A splendid, toned example, of wonderful style. Extremely fine.

LUCANIA, Thourioi. Circa 400-350 BC. Distater (Silver, 25mm, 15.96 g 8). Head of Athena to left, wearing helmet adorned, on the bowl, with Skylla raising her right hand as if to shade her eyes as she looks off in the distance; behind neck, ΙΔ. Rev. ΘΟΥΡΙΩΝ Bull butting to right; in exergue, fish to right; on the bull’s flank, graffito ΑΠ. HN III 1805. Noe F 30. Toned and attractive, but both sides somewhat lightly struck. Good very fine.

BRUTTIUM, Kroton. Circa 300-250 BC. Octobol or Half stater (Silver, 16mm, 2.80 g 4), of reduced weight. Youthful and beardless male head to right, wearing a taenia. Rev. Boehringer, Leontinoi, 63 & SNG ANS 255 & SNG Oxford 1798 (all from the same dies). Nicely toned and from a rare obverse die with a head of Apollo of particularly fine style. Nearly extremely fine.
SICILY, Syracuse. Circa 470 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 20mm, 8.30 g 6). Nude and bearded horseman riding to right, leading a spare horse on his left. Rev. ΣΥΡA - KOΣ - ION Head of Arethusa to right, wearing necklace and pearl diadem, her hair tied up in a krobylos that is bound up and falls over the diadem; around, three dolphins swimming clockwise. Boehringer 98 (same dies). Rizzo p. 34, 23. SNG ANS 26 (same dies). A rare coin of lovely style, beautifully toned and perfectly centered. Some surface roughness, otherwise, extremely fine.

THESSALY, Atrax. Early 4th century BC. Trihemiobol (Silver, 14mm, 1.36 g 7). Horseman on horse trotting slowly to right, wearing kausia, short tunic and with a clock over his shoulders and raising his right hand over his horse’s head. Rev. ΑΤΡΑΓΙ - Ο - Ν (last two letters retrograde) Bull walking to right, his head turned slightly forward. Triton XV (BCD II), 3 January 2012, 50 (same dies). Extremely rare, apparently the better of the two known examples and of wonderful style. The usual rough surfaces, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
THESSALY, Krannon. Late 5th or early 4th century BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 8mm, 0.44 g 7). ΠΙ Young male head wearing petasos to right. Rev. Κ-Ρ-Α Horse’s head and neck to right, turned very slightly front. BCD 1437.1 (same dies). Extremely rare and of elegant style. Usual rough surfaces, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
THESSALY, Larissa. Circa 375 BC. Trihemiobol (?) (Silver, 10mm, 1.15 g 4), Plei..... Head of the nymph Larissa to right, her hair rolled at the back, wearing a pendant earring. Rev. ΛΑΡΙ / ΠΛΕΙ Bull butting to right. BCD (Triton XV), 275. Of the greatest rarity, the second example known, unpublished except for the BCD catalogue. Slightly rough surfaces, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

THESSALY, Peirasia. Early to mid 4th century. Obol (Silver, 12mm, 0.86 g 7). Youthful male head to left,wearing taenia. Rev. ΠΕΙ - [ΡΑ-ΣΙ-ΕΩΝ] Warrior advancing left, seen from behind, nude but for his helmet, with shield over his left arm and a couched spear held in his right. Pendleton O2 (O2/R2, these dies). Rare. With a reverse of outstanding stylistic elegance. Usual rough surfaces, otherwise, good very fine.
THESSALY, Phaloria (?). Late 5th - early 4th century BC. Obol (Silver, 11mm, 0.91 g 12). Horse trotting to left, with fallen rein. Rev. ΦΑ[Λ] Bull butting to left. Unpublished save for Nomos 4, 2011, 1275 (same dies, but there ascribed to Pharkadon). Of great rarity, the second example known. Surfaces very slightly rough and with a die break at the top center of the reverse, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
THESSALY, Pherai. Early to mid 4th century BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 13mm, 2.24 g 6). Head of Ennodia to left, wearing earring in the form of a cornucopiae (?). Rev. ΦΕΡΑΙ-ΟΝ Lion’s head fountain spout to right, pouring forth water. BCD II, Triton XV, 691.2 (same dies). SNG Alpha Bank 259. Clear and well-struck with an attractive, dark patina. About extremely fine.

Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet, pendant earring and pearl necklace, her hair falling down in two straight ringlets. Rev. ΟΠΟΝ - ΤΙΩΝ Ajax, nude but for helmet, moving right, holding short sword in his right hand and, in his left, shield adorned with a serpent on the inside; below, on ground, two spears. PHOKIS, Delphi. Amphictionic issues, circa 336-334 BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 14mm, 2.94 g 1). Veiled head of Demeter to left, wearing wreath of grain leaves. Rev. BCD -, but cf. 391. Nanteuil 893 (this coin). A beautifully toned and very attractive coin. About extremely fine.
ATTICA, Athens. Circa 440s-430s BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24mm, 17.20 g 11). Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Attic helmet adorned with three olive leaves and palmette, round earring and pearl necklace. Rev. AΘE Owl standing to right, head facing the viewer; to left, olive sprig and crescent moon; all within incuse square. Agora 8. Dewing 1596 ff. Svoronos pl. 13, 21 ff. A well struck example of fine style. Some minor traces of die rust on the obverse, otherwise, good extremely fine.
ATTICA, Athens. Circa 430s-420s BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 23mm, 17.19 g 7). Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Attic helmet adorned with three olive leaves and palmette, round earring and pearl necklace. Rev. ΑΘΕ Owl standing right, head facing; behind, olive spray and crescent moon; all within incuse square. Agora 8c. Svoronos pl. 15, 37 var. A very sharp and well-struck piece. Some traces of die rust on the obverse, otherwise, good extremely fine.
ATTICA, Athens. Circa 420-405 or very early 4th century. Tetradrachm (Silver, 21mm, 17.20 g 9). Helmeted head of Athena to right. Rev. ΑΘΕ Owl standing right, head facing; behind, olive spray and crescent moon. Cf. Svoronos pls. 17, 24 and 19, 3 and 5. A bold and attractive piece, very nicely centered. Extremely fine.
CORINTHIA, Corinth. Circa 560/550 BC. Stater (Silver, 20mm, 8.85 g). Pegasus flying to left, with curled wing; below, Ϙ. Rev. Incuse of millsail pattern. ACGC 220. BCD -. Ravel 19. Extremely rare and important. Slightly rough surfaces and with an obverse struck from a slightly worn die, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
CORINTHIA, Corinth. Circa 550-500 BC. Drachm (Silver, 15mm, 2.72 g). Ϙ Pegasos flying left with curved wing. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square in the form of a swastika. BCD Corinth 7 (same dies). BMC 29. A very attractive, well-centered and well-preserved example. Good very fine.

Δ - Ι Head of Aphrodite to left, wearing pearl necklace and Corinthian helmet with leather neck guard; to right, behind head, Zeus seated to left, holding eagle in his left hand and brandishing thunderbolt in his left. BCD Corinth 131. Calciati 450. Ravel 1075b. A lovely, toned and well-centered example. Good extremely fine.
SIKYONIA, Sikyon. Circa 450-425 BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 8mm, 0.41 g 2). Dove walking to left with closed wings. Rev. Η - Σ Dove walking to left with open wings. BCD Peloponnesos 172. A lovely, beautifully centered example. Extremely fine.
MESSENIA, Messene. Late 2nd - early 1st centuries BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 15mm, 2.41 g 3). Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. ΜΕΣ within olive wreath with ties at the bottom. BCD Peloponnesos -. Grandjean Serie X, Emission α, D57/R79 (same dies). Extremely rare, one of five examples known, of which two, one in the ANS and one in Berlin, share these dies. Good very fine.
ARKADIA, Kleitor. Circa 460-440 BC. Obol (Silver, 9mm, 1.03 g). Forepart of bridled horse to right. Rev. Incuse of mill-sail pattern with four raised and four sunken triangles. BCD Peloponnesos 1416 = SNG Lockett 2519 = Weber 2323 (same dies). Extremely rare. Good very fine.
ARKADIA, Pallantion. Late 5th - early 4th centuries BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 8mm, 0.47 g 9). Bare head of the eponymous hero Pallas to right. Rev. Ε / ΠΑΛ (retrograde) all within an incuse square. BCD Peloponnesos -. BMC 1 = Traité III, 994. Extremely rare. Very fine.
CRETE, Gortyna. Circa 300-280/70 BC. Drachm (Silver, 19mm, 5.68 g 6). Large head of Europa to right, wearing pendant earring and pearl necklace, and with her hair bound with grain leaves. Rev. Protome of a bull to right, his head turned slightly toward the viewer. BMC 38. Le Rider pl. XX, 17. Svoronos p. 169, 93 and pl. XV, 12. A bold, well-struck and unusually nice example. Some black deposits, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
CRETE, Gortyna. Circa 300-280/70 BC. Drachm (Silver, 19mm, 5.76 g 6). Small head of Europa to right, wearing pendant earring and pearl necklace, and with her hair bound with grain leaves. Rev. Protome of a bull to right, his head turned toward the viewer. Cf. BMC 38 and Svoronos p. 169, 93 and pl. XV, 12. A most attractive, toned example with an unusually small and well engraved head of Europa on the obverse. Usual traces of overstriking, otherwise, good very fine.
CRETE. Itanos. Circa 350-320 BC. Stater (Silver, 22 mm, 11.62 g, 3 h). Head of Athena to left, wearing a crested Attic helmet adorned with two olive leaves on the visor and a palmette on a tendril on the bowl. Rev. [Ι]ΤΑΝΙ[ΩΝ or ΟΝ] Eagle with folded wings standing left, his head turned back to right; all within shallow incuse square. Svoronos p. 204, 24-25 and pl. XIX, 10. Rare. Toned, attractive and in high relief. Struck from slightly worn dies, otherwise, very good very fine.
CRETE, Kydonia. Circa 320-270 BC. Stater (Silver, 20mm, 11.60 g 7). Head of a maenad to left, wearing a vine wreath. Rev. ΚΥ[ΔΩΝ] The archer Kydon standing left, stringing his bow. Gorny & Mosch 232, 2015, 239 (same dies, but at an earlier state). Cf. Le Rider pl. X, 1-5. Svoronos p. 103, 24 and cf. pl. IX, 15. Struck from a worn and damaged obverse die. Uncleaned as found, otherwise, nearly very fine.
CRETE, Lyttos. Circa 320-270 BC. Stater (Silver, 25mm, 11.31 g 1). Eagle flying to right, with open wings and holding an object of prey (a fish head?) in its talons. Rev. ΛΥ Boar’s head to right, within a linear square contained within a shallow, incuse square. Le Rider pl. XXXIII, 1 = Svoronos p. 235, 56 and pl. XXII, 2 = Traité pl. CCXLVII, 13. A rare variety. Well struck and well centered. Uncleaned and with even, dark deposits as found; otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
CRETE, Lyttos. Circa 320-270 BC. Stater (Silver, 21mm, 11.47 g 10). Eagle, with spread wings, standing to right, preparing to fly. Rev. ΛΥΚ / ΤΙΟΝ Boar’s head to right; within deep and somewhat irregular incuse square. Le Rider -. Cf. Svoronos pl. XXII, 7 (obverse). A rare variety; bold and attractive. Overstruck, with traces of an undertype on the obverse; otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
CRETE, Phaistos. Circa 330-320 BC. Stater (Silver, 27mm, 11.43 g 10). 𐅝ΕΛΧΑΝΟΣ (retrograde) The nude figure of a young man, Velchanos, seated left within a tree; holding a rooster, standing on his right knee, with his right hand, and resting his left on his seat. Rev. ΦΑΙΣΤΙΟΝ Bull, with head lowered, butting to right. Le Rider p. 91, 38 and pl. XXII, 20. Svoronos p. 259, 29 and pl. XXIII, 24. Very rare and of elegant style. Dark patina as found and with traces of overstriking; otherwise, good very fine or better.
CRETE. Polyrhenion. Circa 320-270 BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 17 mm, 2.70 g, 2 h). ΠΥΘΟΔΩΡΟΥ Head of Artemis Diktynna (?) to left, wearing triple pendant earring, pearl necklace and with her hair bound up and tied into a sakkos ornamented with stars at the back. Rev. [ΠΟΛ] Bull’s head facing, with fillets hanging from its horns. Le Rider pl. XXVIII, 37. Stefanakis, Πολυρρήνια, 25 (same dies). Svoronos p. 278, 15 and pl. XXVI, 4. An attractive piece, clear and well-struck. Overstruck on a contemporary hemidrachm from Argos. Good very fine.
CRETE, Rhaukos. Circa 330-270 BC. Stater (Silver, 26mm, 11.36 g 12). Poseidon, nude but for his wreath, standing right, holding a trident in his right hand and the reins of his horse, standing right behind him with his right fore hoof raised. Rev. ΡΑ-ΥΚ-[ΙΟΝ] (retrograde) Trident with points downward. Gorny & Mosch 232, 2015, 247 (same dies). Le Rider pl. VI, 7-8. Svoronos Suppl. 58 = pl. 13, 8 (same dies). An excellent, clear piece with an obverse of unusually fine Classical style. Reverse lightly struck, otherwise, about extremely fine.
KINGS of PONTOS. Mithradates VI Eupator, Circa 120-63 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 30mm, 16.76 g 12), Pergamon (?), year 231 = 67/6 BC. Diademed head of Mithradates VI to right, his hair streaming out behind. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ // ΜΙΘΡΑΔΑΤΟΥ / ΕΥΠΑΤΟΡΟΣ / ΑΛΣ Stag feeding to left; to left, star within crescent; to right, monogram; all within ivy wreath. DCA 692. De Callataÿ p. 20 (these dies not noted, but cf. D77). RG pl. 20, 6. A splendid piece, struck on a broad flan. Metal defect on cheek, otherwise, good extremely fine.

MYSIA, Kyzikos. 5th-4th century BC. Stater (Electrum, 19x15mm, 16.09 g). Youthful Dionysos reclining left, on the back of a panther moving to right, holding a kantharos in his extended right hand and resting his left on the side of the panther; to left, below knee, tip of his thyrsos; below, over panther’s legs, tunny fish left. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. BMFA 1541. SNG Paris 302-303. Von Fritze 155. Lightly toned. A clear and well-centered example. Good very fine.
TROAS, Lamponeia. 4th century BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 12mm, 1.85 g 12). Bearded head of Dionysos to right, probably wearing a simple taenia (not a wreath as has been stated). Rev. Λ-Α-Μ Bucranium within shallow incuse square. BMC 2. Minor die break on the obverse and some surface roughness. Very fine.
LESBOS, Unattributed early mint. Circa 500-450 BC. Stater (Billon, 18mm, 11.29 g). Two calf’s heads confronted, forming a single facing head; between them, laurel tree. Rev. Incuse square. SNG Copenhagen 285. SNG von Aulock 1682. Traité I, pl. XV, 14. Toned and very clearly struck. With a fascinating optical illusion on the obverse. Unusually well-preserved. About extremely fine.
LESBOS, Mytilene. Circa 478-455 BC. Hekte (Electrum, 10mm, 2.48 g). ΛΕ Head of a lion to right, with closed mouth. Rev. Head of a bull to right, incuse. Bodenstedt 28. Traité II, 2132 and pl. CLIX, 7. Very rare. Well struck in high relief. Extremely fine.
IONIA, Uncertain. Circa 600-550 BC. Hekte (Electrum, 10mm, 2.78 g), Phocaean standard. Ibex, or goat, kneeling to left, his head turned back to right. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Apparently unpublished save for an example, from the same dies, that appeared as lot 158 in Gemini VI, 2010. A lovely piece, with an expressive and archaic-looking caprid. Well struck. Extremely fine.
IONIA, Uncertain, perhaps Phokaia. Circa 600-550 BC. Hekte (Electrum, 9mm, 2.75 g). Facing head of a lioness (or a panther?); above, here off the flan, seal to right. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Rosen 312 (= MM 72, 75). SNG Copenhagen 329 (Uncertain Asia Minor). Cf. Weidauer 159-161 (variant obverse and with two reverse punches) and 162-165 (hemihektes). Extremely rare and boldly struck. Struck on a short flan, otherwise, extremely fine.
IONIA, Ephesos. Circa 202-150 BC. Drachm (Silver, 16mm, 4.15 g 12), Monimos. E - Φ Bee with straight open wings. Rev. ΜΟΝΙΜΟΣ Stag standing right; behind, palm tree. SNG von Aulock 7828. Clear and well-struck. Extremely fine.
IONIA, Miletos. Circa 340-325 BC. Drachm (Silver, 14mm, 3.61 g 1), Diagoras. Laureate head of Apollo to left. Rev. ΔΙΑΓΟΡΑΣ Lion standing left, his head turned back to right; above, 8-pointed star; to left, Miletos monogram; in exergue, magistrate’s name. Demeester 122 (this coin). Cf. Deppert 148 (same obverse die). A truly spectacular example of this issue, perfectly struck, beautifully preserved and finely toned. Good extremely fine.
