ELIS. Olympia. 93rd Olympiad, 408 BC. Stater (Silver, 23 mm, 12.20 g, 5 h). Head of an eagle to left; below, white poplar leaf (Populus alba) . Rev. F - A Winged thunderbolt within and olive wreath tied at the bottom. Dewing 869 (same dies). Gulbenkian 541 (same obverse die). Seltman 151 (dies BS/γτ), ε = Weber 1921 (this coin). With an eagle's head of great power, beautifully toned and most attractive. About extremely fine.

From an old European collection, ex Naville XII, 23 October 1926, 1546 (consigned by Spink's in London), and from the collection of Consul Eduard Weber, Hirsch XXI, 16 November 1908, 1921.

The eagle's head on this coin is certainly one of the finest animal representations in the entirety of ancient Greek art.
