CELTIC, Middle Danube. Uncertain tribe. 2nd century BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 21 mm, 12.35 g, 2 h), The ‘Kroisbach’ type, with diadem and ‘Reiterstumpf’, Burgenland or Western Slovakia. Diademed, beardless male head to right. Rev. Horse prancing to left with the torso of a rider on his back; below, caduceus to left. CCCBM I, xlvii, b, 153. Lanz 743. Nanteuil 26. OTA 469. Lovely deep toning and fine example with sharp details. Extremely fine.

CAMPANIA. Hyria. Circa 405-385 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 19 mm, 7.35 g, 5 h). Head of Athena to left, wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with an olive-wreath and an owl standing to left. Rev. YDIANΟΣ Man-faced bull walking to right. HN III, 539. Rutter 122 (HO46/HR108). SNG ANS 265-6 (same dies). Attractively toned and of fine style, and with a rare legend form. Good very fine.

CAMPANIA. Neapolis. Circa 320-300 BC. Nomos or Didrachm (Silver, 19 mm, 6.02 g, 8 h), struck under the magistrate Diophanes. Diademed head of the nymph Parthenope to right, wearing triple-pendant earring and pearl necklace; behind neck, kantharos; below, ΔΙ. Rev. NEOΠOΛITHΣ Man-headed bull walking right, head turned to the front; above, Nike flying right, placing wreath on bull's head. HN III 571. Sambon 447. SNG ANS 320. With a lovely head of Parthenope. Some light porosity, otherwise, about extremely fine.

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 272-240 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 6.48 g), struck under the magistrates Lykinos and Sy... Horseman advancing to left, crowning horse with a wreath held in his right hand, and holding reins in his left; to right, ΣΥ; below horse, ΛΥΚΙ/ΝΟΣ. Rev. ΤΑ-ΡΑΣ Phalanthos seated on dolphin to left, brandishing a trident held in his right hand, and with a chlamys draped over his extended left arm; to right, owl standing to left, head facing front. HN III 1025. SNG ANS 1165. Vlasto 836-41. Well centered. Nearly extremely fine.

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 240-228 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 21 mm, 6.47 g, 11 h), struck under the magistrates Zopyrion, So.. and Ep... Young man, wearing a tunic and leaning back with his head facing front, riding a horse springing to right, holding the horse's mane with his left hand and the reins with his right; below right, bucranion with the letters ΣΩ between its horns; below, on the exergual line, ΖΩΠΥΡΙΩΝ. Rev. Τ-ΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos, nude, riding dolphin to left, holding a hippocamp in his right hand and a trident with his left; to right, head of Pan to left, above the dolphin's back, monogram of ΕΠ. HN III 1054. SNG ANS 1246. Vlasto 940-941. With an unusual depiction of the rider, appearing as if he is just barely remaining seated on the horse, but probably performing some acrobatic stunt to please a crowd. Extremely fine.

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 240-228 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 19 mm, 6.53 g, 5 h), struck under the magistrate Olympis. Cuirassed warrior, brandishing spear in his right hand and holding the reins in his left, riding horse galloping to right; in field to left, wreath; below horse, OΛYMΠIΣ. Rev. Τ-ΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos, nude, riding dolphin to left, holding kantharos in his right hand, cornucopia in his left; in field to right, tripod. HN III 1055. SNG ANS 1249. Vlasto 942-943. Well centered and of fine style. Extremely fine.

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 240-228 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 20 mm, 6.45 g, 1 h), struck under the magistrate Aristippos. APICΤIΠΠ[OC] Ephebe, nude but for a wreath on his head, holding filleted palm frond in his right hand and reins in his left, riding horse rearing to right; behind, monogram of AP. Rev. ΤΑ-ΡΑC Phalanthos, laureate and nude, riding dolphin to left, holding kantharos in his right hand and resting his left on the back of the dolphin; to right, monogram of MY. HN III 1056. SNG ANS 1253. Vlasto 947-949. Bold and lustrous. The reverse struck just a touch off-center, otherwise, extremely fine.

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 240-228 BC. Nomos (Silver, 20 mm, 6.51 g, 1 h), struck under the magistrates Philokles, Le..., and Arn.... Nude jockey riding horse walking to right, holding the reins in his left hand and crowning the horse with a wreath held in his right; to left, monogram of ΑΡΝ; to right, monogram of ΛΕ; below, ΦΙΛ-Ο/ΚΛΗC over dolphin swimming to right. Rev. ΤΑ-ΡΑΣ Taras riding dolphin to left, holding a horse rhyton in his right hand and a trident (the two side prongs of the trident head are in the form of dolphins) in his left; to right, two highly elaborate amphoroi (or loutrophoroi?) on elaborate stands and with lids. HN III 1057. SNG ANS 1254. SNG BN 2057. Vlasto 950-954. Well centered and with a particularly bold obverse. Extremely fine.

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 240-228 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 19 mm, 6.52 g, 4 h), struck under the magistrate Xenokrates. Armoured military leader, riding a horse moving slowly to left, raising his right hand in salute and turning his bearded and laureate head to face the viewer; in upper field to right, monogram and pileus; below horse, ΞΕ-ΝΟΚΡΑ/Τ-ΗΣ. Rev. [Τ]ΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos, nude, riding dolphin to left, his body turned slightly back to right, holding a trident over his right shoulder in his right hand and holding his drapery in his upraised left; to right, monogram of ΣΩ; below, waves and, barely visible to right, a cuttlefish. HN III 1058. SNG ANS 1258. Vlasto 955-958. Clear details (note especially the faces) and lustrous surfaces. Extremely fine.

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 240-228 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 20 mm, 6.50 g, 3 h), struck under the magistrates Kallikrates, Epik... and Ne.... Bare-headed, bearded and armored military leader riding horse galloping to right, his head and torso facing and his right arm stretched out to left, holding Nike crowning him to right; in field to left, monogram of ΕΠΙΚ; below horse, KAΛΛIKPA / THΣ. Rev. TAPAΣ Phalanthos astride dolphin to left, holding, in his right hand, Nike crowning him to right, and, in his left, an ornamental trident; to right, monogram of NE. HN III 1059. SNG ANS 1260. SNG Paris 2059. Vlasto 963. A beautiful, sharply struck and well-centered example. Good extremely fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 520-510 BC. Stater (Silver, 27 mm, 8.12 g, 12 h). ΜΕΤΑ Ear of barley with eight grains; around, border of dots within two concentric linear circles. Rev. Ear of barley with eight grains, all incuse; rayed border. HN III 1467. Noe 115 (same dies). SNG ANS 209. A very attractive, beautifully toned example of splendid quality, struck in high relief on a broad flan, rare thus. Extremely fine.

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 340-330 BC. Distater (Silver, 26 mm, 15.85 g, 7 h), struck under the magistrates Ape.. and Ami... Bearded head of Leukippos to right, wearing a Corinthian helmet [ornamented with Nike driving a quadriga and a hippocamp]; behind neck to left, ΑΠΗ and forepart of a lion to right. Rev. ΜΕΤΑΠΟΝΤΙΝΩΝ Grain ear with leaf to left; above leaf, club; below leaf, ΑΜΙ. De Sartiges 42 (this coin). HN III 1574. Johnston Class B, 1.6 (same dies). Kraay & Hirmer 242. SNG ANS 430-1. Very charmingly toned with golden highlights, and with a particularly hard-to-find provenance. Reverse struck silghtly off-centre, otherwise, good very fine.

LUCANIA. Sybaris. Circa 550-510 BC. Stater (Silver, 28 mm, 8.25 g, 12 h). VM Bull standing left, head turned back to right, on groundline composed of pellets between two lines. Rev. Incuse bull standing right, head turned back to left. HN III 1729. Gorini 2. SNG ANS 828 ff. SNG Lloyd 449-50. Well centered with attractive old toning. Somewhat irregular flan, otherwise, good very fine.

LUCANIA. Velia. Circa 465-440 BC. Drachm (Silver, 16 mm, 3.83 g, 1 h). Head of nymph right, her hair held in the back by her diadem. Rev. VEΛH Owl standing right, head facing, on olive branch; to upper right, Δ. HN III 1265. SNG Delepierre 401 (same dies). Williams 87c (O63/R61; this coin). Attractive old collection toning. Very fine.

BRUTTIUM. Rhegion. Circa 435-425 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 29 mm, 17.04 g, 5 h). Lion's mask facing. Rev. RECINOS (retrograde) Iokastos, bearded and draped from the waist, seated left on backless stool, holding long scepter in his left hand and resting right on the stool; all within olive wreath. De Sartiges pl. V, 73 = Herzfelder 52f (D31/R43, this coin). HN III 2488. Wonderful old toning, and with an illustrious pedigree. A few minor scratches, otherwise, good very fine.

SICILY. Akragas. Circa 465/4-446 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.42 g, 1 h). AKRAC - ANTOΣ Eagle standing to left. Rev. Crab seen from above. BMC 37 (same dies). Westermark 317.2 (this coin, dies O4/R11). Attractive, lightly toned and well-struck. Some areas of striking flatness and some minor marks, otherwise, extremely fine.

SICILY. Himera. Circa 530-483/2 BC. Drachm (Silver, 20 mm, 5.48 g). Rooster standing to left. Rev. Mill-sail pattern of eight triangles, alternatively raised and sunken; all within a rayed border. HGC 2, 421. Kraay Group III, uncertain dies. With a bold and lively rooster, nicely toned. Good very fine.

SICILY. Himera. Circa 420-410 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 17.65 g, 3 h), signed by the engraver Mai.... The nymph Himera, wearing chiton and peplos, driving quadriga galloping to right, beginning to slow down at the finish of the race; above, Nike flying to left, bearing a wreath for the driver in her right hand and holding a tablet inscribed ΜΑΙ in her left; in the exergue, hippocamp swimming to left. Rev. [ΙΜΕΡΑΙΟΝ] The nymph Himera standing facing, turned slightly to the left, holding phiale in her right hand to pour a libation over an altar with square horns to left; to right, satyr standing to right in a fountain basin, showering under a stream of water emanating from a lion’s head spout. AMB 306 (same dies). Biucchi, Q. Tic 17, 1988, 22 (same dies). Boehringer, , pl. VII, 9 (same dies). Gutman-Schwabacher 20 (same dies). Kraay & Hirmer pl. 22,71 (same dies). Rizzo pl. SICILY. Kamarina. Circa 405 BC. Diobol (Gold, 11.5 mm, 1.14 g, 7 h). Head of Athena to right, wearing a crested Attic helmet adorned with a hippocamp. Rev. KA Olive-spray with two berries. SNG ANS 1209. Weber 1248 (this coin). Westermark & Jenkins 206.14 (this coin). Removed from NGC encapsulation #4936361-003. Rare. Very well-centered and clearly struck. Very fine.

SICILY. Leontini. Circa 450-440 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.22 g, 5 h). Laureate head of Apollo to right. Rev. LEO-N-TI-NO-N Head of roaring lion to right; around, four barley corns. Boehringer, Münzgeschichte 40 (same obverse die). Gulbenkian 217 (same obverse die). HGC 667. SNG ANS 229-30 (same obverse die). Warren 254 (this coin). A wonderful specimen, perfectly centered with attractive toning. Extremely fine.

SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 21 mm, 8.55 g, 1 h), under Gelon I, circa 485-480. Nude and bearded horseman riding to right, holding reins in both hands. Rev. ΣVRA-KOΣ-IΟN Head of Arethusa to right, wearing necklace and pearl diadem, her hair falling down behind; around, three dolphins swimming clockwise. Boehringer 98 (V46/R66). Rizzo pl. XXXIV, 23 (same dies). SNG ANS 26 (same dies). Perfectly centered and nicely toned. Very fine.

SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 28 mm, 17.07 g, 10 h), c. 450. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and the reins in both; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses; in the exergue, ketos to right. Rev. ΣV-RΑΚ-ΟΣ-Ι-Ο-Ν Diademed head of Arethusa to right, her hair bound with a taenia, wearing an elaborate pendant earring and a necklace of pendants; around, four dolphins swimming to right. Boehringer 534 (V273/R375). SNG Lockett 937 (same dies). Attractively toned and with a wonderfully elegant reverse. Minor traces of corrosion and with an obverse struck from a rusty die. Extremely fine.

SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysios I, 405-367 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 17.33 g, 1 h), unsigned dies in the style of Eukleidas, circa 405-400. Charioteer, holding reins in both hands and kentron in right, driving a quadriga rushing to left, about to turn, the head of the third horse turned back to right; above, Nike flying right to crown the driver; in exergue, dolphin leaping left. Rev. Σ-Υ-ΡΑ[Κ-Ο-Σ-ΙΩN] Head of Arethusa to left, wearing ampyx, double-spiral earring and simple necklace with a large pearl pendant; in the field to left, three dolphins: two swimming downwards and one upwards; to right, behind Arethusa's neck, dolphin swimming downwards. Fischer-Bossert/Tudeer 92 (dies 33/64). HGC 2, 1345. Dewing 857 (same dies). SNG ANS 297 (same dies). Attractively toned and a with very lovely rendition of Arethusa. Die-breaks on the obverse, otherwise, about extremely fine.

SICILY. Tauromenion. Circa 214-212 BC. 15 Litrai or Trihemiobol (Gold, 10 mm, 1.00 g, 7 h). Laureate head of Apollo to left; in the field to right, fly. Rev. TAYPOME-NITAN Tripod lebes with lid, three ring handles, ornamental volutes below the bowl and legs ending in lion's paws; above to left, monogram of API. HGC 2, 1571. SNG ANS 1115. Of unusually fine Hellenistic style, especially for such a small coin, toned, and with an illustrious pedigree. Some minor scratches and marks, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

CARTHAGE. Circa 350-320 BC. Stater (Gold, 19 mm, 9.29 g, 9 h). Head of Tanit to left, wreathed with grain ears, wearing triple pendant earring and necklace with ten pendants. Rev. Horse standing to right; on groundline, before hindlegs, trefoil of pellets with point upwards. Jenkins & Lewis Group IIIi, 106 (same dies). MAA 4. Shaply struck and quite lustrous, a lovely example. Good extremely fine.

CIMMERIAN BOSPOROS. Pantikapaion. Circa 340-325 BC. Stater (Gold, 20.5 mm, 9.15 g, 10 h). Head of Pan to left, wearing a wreath of ivy. Rev. Π-Α-Ν Griffin standing on grain ear to left, his head facing front, holding a spear in his mouth and with his right forepaw raised. Anokhin 1021. HGC 7, 20. Kraay & Hirmer 440. MacDonald 54. SNG BM Black Sea 867. Virtually as struck.

THRACE. Ainos. Circa 457/6-456/5 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 16.45 g, 1 h). Head of Hermes to right, his hair wound around his head in a plait, wearing a petasos with a beaded border and a button at the top. Rev. AINI Male goat standing to right; to right, ivy leaf within a crescent; all within a shallow incuse square. AMNG 272. De Sartiges pl. XI, 165. May, Ainos 48c (A29/P39, this coin). C. C. Vermeule, "Greek Coins in the Elisabeth Washburn Collection at Bryn Mawr College," NC (1956), 77 (with the note purchased from "Hirsch, 1941"). A wonderful example of rustic style, and nicely toned. THRACE. Maroneia. Circa 386/5-348/7 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 23 mm, 11.13 g, 11 h), struck under the magistrate Hikesios. ΜΑΡΩ Horse with trailing rein rearing to left. Rev. ΕΠΙ ΙΚΕ-ΣΙΟ Grape arbor in linear square; to left, caduceus; all within shallow incuse square. BMC 25 (same dies). Schönert-Geiss 425 (V9/R14) = West 92a (this coin). SNG Lockett 1200 (same dies). Deeply toned and attractive. Nearly extremely fine.

ISLANDS OFF THRACE, Thasos. Circa 500-463 BC. Stater (Silver, 21 mm, 9.94 g), c. 500-480. Ithyphallic satyr advancing to right, carrying protesting nymph. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Asyut 128. BMFA 851. Le Rider, Thasiennes 2. SNG Copenhagen 1009. Superbly struck in high relief with excellent details and with a nymph whose expression seems rather more amused than anything else! Extremely fine.

KINGS OF THRACE. Lysimachos, 305-281 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 32 mm, 17.06 g, 12 h), Alexandreia Troas, 297/6-282/1. Diademed head of the deified Alexander the Great to right, with horn of Ammon over his ear. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ - ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ Athena seated to left on throne, leaning her left elbow on her shield and holding Nike, crowning the king’s name, in her right hand; behind, transverse spear with point below left; in field to left, monogram; on throne, monogram of ΘE. Müller -. Meadows, Alexandria 22 (O13/R44) = SNG Berry 438 (same dies). Thompson -. Of a supreme early Hellenistic style! Very high relief and with a bold portrait of Alexander the Great. Extremely fine.

KINGS OF THRACE. Lysimachos, 305-281 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 30 mm, 16.92 g, 11 h), struck posthumously in Bithynian Kios, shortly after 281. Diademed head of Alexander the Great to right with horn of Ammon over his ear. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ Athena seated to left on throne, leaning her left elbow on her shield and holding Nike, crowning the king’s name, in her right hand; behind, transverse spear; in outer left field, club; in inner left field, monogram of ΠΑ; in exergue, bow in bowcase and monogram of ΔIO. HGC 7, 555. Marinescu Issue 38, 135. Müller 410 (as Erythrae). Wonderful portrait; a sharp, lustrous and high grade coin struck on perfect silver. Good extremely fine.

THRACO-MACEDONIAN TRIBES, Derrones. Circa 480-465 BC. Dodekadrachm (Silver, 35 mm, 40.00 g). Male driver, wearing petasos and robes, seated to left on a throne-like chair, mounted on a two-wheeled ox-cart moving slowly to left, holding the reins in his left hand and a curious goad in his raised right; above the oxen, crested Corinthian helmet to left. Rev. Triskeles to right, almost totally effaced by die wear, on plain field. Svoronos, Hell. Prim., 17 and pl. II, 2-3. A big, bold and impressive coin. Very fine.

MACEDON. Akanthos. Circa 380-350 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25.5 mm, 14.27 g, 9 h), struck under the magistrate Alexios. ΑΛΕΞΙOΣ Lion to right, attacking bull collapsing to left. Rev. ΑΚΑ-Ν-ΘΙΟ-Ν in shallow incuse square around quadripartite square with stippled quarters in relief. Cf. Desneux 150 (unrecorded dies but reverse close to R135). HGC 3.1, 391. SNG ANS -. Tselekas, Period G, 392 var. (O332/R-) . Finely detailed and sharply struck. Good extremely fine.

MACEDON, Chalkidian League. Olynthos. Circa 432-348 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 14.37 g, 12 h), struck under the magistrate Timarchos, circa 370-367. Laureate head of Apollo with long hair to right. Rev. X-A-Λ-KIΔ-EΩN / EΠI TIMAPXOY / ΔE Kithara. Robinson & Clement Group Q, 97 (A64/P84). SNG ANS 503 (same obverse die). With an realistic portrait of lovely style. About extremely fine.

MACEDON, Chalkidian League. Olynthos. Circa 432-348 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 14.30 g, 11 h), struck under the magistrate Annika, circa 351. Laureate head of Apollo with long hair to right. Rev. X-A-Λ-KIΔ-EΩN / EΠI ANNIKA Kithara. De Luynes 1551 (same dies). Robinson & Clement Group U, 125 (A78/P107). SNG ANS 509-10. Attractive style. Nearly extremely fine.

MACEDON. Neapolis. Circa 500-480 BC. Stater (Silver, 22 mm, 9.06 g), c. 500. Facing Gorgoneion with gnashing teeth and extended tongue. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Dewing 1063. SNG ANS 403-404. Svoronos HPM pl. 9, 31. Very sharply struck, a most attractive example with dark toning and with the earlier, narrower gorgoneion. Extremely fine.

MACEDON. Neapolis. Circa 424-350 BC. Drachm (Silver, 17 mm, 3.82 g, 2 h). Gorgoneion facing with protruding tongue. Rev. Ν-Ε / Ο-Π Head of the nymph of Neapolis to right, her hair coiled around her head and with a bun at the back, wearing a plain necklace with a pendant. AMNG III, 11 and pl. XVI, 25. Kraay & Hirmer 434. SNG ANS 429. With a stunning Gorgon head, very well centered on a broad flan and a fine pedigree. Good very fine.

KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III 'the Great', 336-323 BC. Dekadrachm (Silver, 35 mm, 42.55 g, 2 h), Babylon, circa 325-323. Head of youthful Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus seated left on high-backed throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and, on his right, an eagle standing to right with closed wings; in the field to left, M; below throne, monogram. HGC 3.2, 909. Price 3600 var. (control marks in different positions). A very rare variety. Toned and in excellent silver, lacking the usual crystallisation. Usual marks an abrasions, otherwise, good very fine.

KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III 'the Great', 336-323 BC. Quarter Stater (Gold, 12 mm, 2.17 g, 6 h), Amphipolis, circa 330-320. Head of Athena to right, wearing Corinthian helmet adorned with serpent. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝ/ΔΡΟΥ Thunderbolt, bow and club. Price 165. A very appealing coin. Scattered light marks, otherwise, good very fine.

Head of Athena Parthenos to right, wearing an Attic helmet adorned with Pegasos, tendril, and four horse protomes. Rev. ΑΙΝΙΑΝΩΝ / ΕΥΚΡΑΤΗΣ Phemios, as a slinger, nude but for chlamys over his shoulder and sword on baldric, standing facing, head turned to right, hurling his sling to right; behind him, two spears leaning against his right leg; in the field on the far right, trophy. BCD Thessaly I, 1018 = De Callataÿ 2004, 22 (this coin). SNG Copenhagen 13. The finest example known, extremely rare thus, and with an impressive pedigree stretching back to 1909. Nearly extremely fine.

ATTICA. Athens. Circa 490-480 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 22 mm, 17.12 g, 4 h). Head of Athena to right, wearing Attic helmet with crest and a spiral ornament on the bowl behind her ear. Rev. ΑΘΕ Heavy-bodied owl standing to right, head facing; in upper field to left, olive sprig with two leaves and a berry on a long, central stem; all within incuse square. Cf. BMC 3, Seltman 61 (A43/P48), and Svoronos, Trésor pl. 2, 29. Remarkably clear, well-centered and very boldly struck; with an unusual positioning of the alpha at the level of the owl's neckline rather than at the level of the owl's eyes. About extremely fine.

Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Attic helmet adorned with three olive leaves and palmette, disc earring and pearl necklace. Rev. ΑΘΕ Owl standing right, with a small, three-pointed tail, feet close together, and head facing; behind, olive spray and crescent moon; all within incuse square. Starr Group II. C, cf. 66-68. F - A Winged thunderbolt within and olive wreath tied at the bottom. Dewing 869 (same dies). Gulbenkian 541 (same obverse die). Seltman 151 (dies BS/γτ), ε = Weber 1921 (this coin). With an eagle's head of great power, beautifully toned and most attractive. About extremely fine.

Minor flan crack and with a slightly double-struck reverse, otherwise, virtually as struck.

ARKADIA. Stymphalos. Circa 350 BC. Obol (Silver, 10 mm, 0.92 g, 3 h). Head of youthful Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. ΣΤΥΜΦΑΛΙΟΝ (retrograde) Head of water bird to right. BCD 1703. SNG Copenhagen 286. Very rare. A very attractive coin with a remarkably detailed bird head on the reverse. Some slight roughness in the die, otherwise, virtually as struck.

Female head to left, hair in a sakkos tied at the nape of her neck, wearing a disc earring and a pearl necklace; below her neck truncation, tunny fish swimming to left. Rev. LESBOS. Methymna. Circa 500/480-460 BC. Tetrobol (Silver, 14 mm, 2.40 g, 10 h). Hoplite running left, wearing a crested Corinthian helmet, holding a round shield on left arm and a spear spear in right hand. Rev. Rider on forepart of horse galloping right; all in dotted square within incuse square. Franke, Münzprägung 4. HGC 6, 887. SNG von Aulock 1738. Nicely centered and toned. Very rare type with clear designs on both sides. Good very fine.

LESBOS. Mytilene. Circa 412-378 BC. Hekte (Electrum, 10.5 mm, 2.52 g, 9 h). Head of Dionysos to right, with a dapper, curly moustache and a pointed beard, and wearing an ivy wreath. Rev. Head of a kalathiskos dancer to right, in a square linear border within an incuse square. Bodenstadt 76 (Vs a/Rs α, same dies). SNG von Aulock 7729 (Bod. 76.3). Very rare, Bodenstedt only knew of 5 examples. An intriguing coin with elegant and unusual "portraits". Very fine.

IONIA. Uncertain mint. Circa 650-600 BC. Hemistater (Electrum, 17 mm, 8.74 g), Samian-Euboic standard. Rough plain surface. Rev. Bipartite incuse square. Unpublished, and one of only four or five examples known. The same reverse die was used on comparable staters, as CNG MBS 73, 2006, 339 and Triton VIII, 2005, 438. An extraordinary coin! With its blank 'obverse' and punched reverse, it stands at the dawn of coinage: between a pure ingot and an actual coin. Nearly as made.

KYRENAICA. Kyrene. Circa 500-480 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 21 mm, 15.93 g, 6 h). Silphium plant with three blossoms and four branches; below, on the left, forepart of a gazelle to right, seemingly grazing on the lower left branch of the silphium; below, on the right, a silphion fruit. Rev. Rectangular incuse punch, divided lengthwise into two rectangles by a band composed of seven large beads; in the lower rectangle, a gazelle crouching to left, his back towards the beaded band, grazing on a silphium plant in the far left corner; in the upper rectangle, an absolutely unclear depiction of either an animal and a silphium plant or, perhaps, just a very large silphium (the interpretation is made extremely difficult both by die rust and and crudeness of the die engraving). For the obverse, cf. BMC p. 123, 2bis and Rosen 759; for the reverse, see BMC p. xix, 1c and pl. I, 4 = Traité II, 1, 2000 and pl. LXIII, 19. An extremely rare, if not unique, archaic issue, with a lovely obverse and a fascinating reverse. Good very fine.
