Extremelly important triple overstrike follis of Heraclius

Starting Price: 250 CHF
Hammer Price:  Unsold
Lot 538

Heraclius, with Heraclius Constantine, 610-641. Follis (Bronze, 32 mm, 12.16 g), Nicomedia, 612-614. D N N N fragmentary inscription Heraclius [and Heraclius Constantine] standing facing, each holding globus cruciger. Rev. ΑΝΝΟ ΙΙΙ (or III) NIKO Large M; cross above, B below. DOC 158-159. Extremely important overstike. Good fine.

This extremely important example is overstruck not once but twice, with enough traces from both host types still visible. It is overstruck on a follis of Phocas, struck in the mint of Constantinople in 603/4 (DOC 2 26D.2) which was already overstruck on a Justin II follis of Nicomedia (DOC I 92-103) minted between 566 and 577 AD. Those overstrucks apart from their high academic importance, can also indirectly inform us about the journey of this specific example from Nicomedia to the capital of the Byzantine empire and them back to its original minting spot.
