LUCANIA, Metapontum. Circa 325-275 BC. Diobol (Silver, 1.09 g 6). Laureate head of Zeus Ammon to right, with ram’s horn around his ear. Rev. ΜΕ Ear of barley with six grains and leaf to right: to right, on leaf, tripod. HN III 1603. Johnston F6.2 (same dies). SNG ANS 520. SNG Lloyd 397. Nicely toned and of splendid style. About extremely fine.

Precisely why Zeus Ammon should appear on the coinage of Metapontum is uncertain; but his connection with grain may supply a reason.
