A desirable brockage denarius

Starting Price: 150 CHF
Hammer Price:  360 CHF
Lot 264

L. Hostilius Saserna, 48 BC. Denarius brockage (Silver, 18 mm, 3.85 g, 12 h), Rome. Bare head of a Gallic woman to right, with long disheveled hair; behind, carnyx. Rev. The same type incuse. For original type: Babelon (Hostilia) 4. Crawford 448/3. CRI 19. Sydenham 953 . A very well preserved brockage, nicely toned. Slightly off center, otherwise, very fine.

What is particularly intriguing about brockages is the way the incuse image on the reverse, struck by the adherence of the previously struck coin to the reverse die, is appreciably larger than it would be had it been struck normally. This is apparently caused by the pressures of striking. In general brockages are quite rare since they would have usually been culled out to be restruck by the mint personnel.
