ITALY. Venice. Tommaso Alvise Mocenigo, Admiral of the Venetian Fleet , 1583-1654. Medal (Bronze, 45 mm, 29.11 g, 12 h), an original cast as made; Alvise Mocenigo was the fleet's commander from 1648 to 1651, and then during the Cretan War, 1653-1654, Candia, 1650. •ALOY•MOCEN•P•V•D•IO•IO•TRIVMPH Bare head of Mocenigo to left, with drapery around the truncation; above, crown between the ends of a surrounding wreath. Rev. ★LIBERAT★NVTRIT★CRET:★ / •V★C / MDCL Two allegorical female figures supporting a plan of the fortress of Candia. Traeger, BBMG 4, p. 322, fig. 7 (this piece). Serenissima 46. Voltelina 944. Wellenheim 14305. Very rare. Attractive and historically important with a fine Venetian portrait by a local artist of talent. Minor scratches and casting faults, otherwise, about extremely fine.
