TROAS. Dardanos (?). Circa 480-450 BC. Obol (Silver, 9 mm, 0.64 g), but possibly minted in Dikaia in Thrace. Rooster standing to right. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Klein -. May, Dikaia-by-Abdera -. Rosen -. Schönert-Geiss, Bisanthe -. SNG Copenhagen -. But for a nearly identical coin, see CNG E235, 2010, 9 (attributed to Dikaia in Thrace, as a trihemiobol, 0.80g). Extremely rare. Toned. Slightly rough surfaces, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the Gallus Collection (Col. L. von Sanders), acquired in the 1990s.

This proud looking rooster is quite reminiscent of those found on the coinage of Himera in Sicily, but the reverse is certainly not Sicilian, and is paralleled by issues in Thrace and northwestern Asia Minor. Thus, both Dikaia-by-Abdera and Dardanos have been suggested as its mint. However, its late owner, Col. Sanders, had close relations with Asia Minor, and also, of course, with chickens.
