SICILY. Unlocated Punic mint. Circa 350-300 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 6.91 g, 1 h), half of a tetradrachm, cut and countermarked. Head of Tanit-Persephone to left, wearing grain wreath and triple pendant earring; around, four dolphins; c/m: wheel with four spokes within circular incuse. Rev. M (in Punic) Horse's head to left; behind, date palm. Cf. Jenkins, Punic 230-248 (uncertain dies). Toned. Uncleaned as found. Very fine.

A most intriguing object! It was cut in half and then countermarked with a crude, wheel-like mark. Where the cutting and countermarking was done is uncertain, though given the circulation patterns of Punic tetradrachms, North Africa or Spain would ben most likely.
