LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 470-440 BC. Stater (Silver, 19.5 mm, 8.33 g, 12 h). ΜΕΤΑ Six-grained barley ear; border of dots. Rev. Six-grained barley ear, as above but without legend and incuse; rayed border. HN III 1484. Noe 233-9. Very attractively toned. Some deposits on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of W. Belser, Zürich, prior to 1965, and that of his son, acquired in the early 1970s.

LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 400-340 BC. Stater (Silver, 20 mm, 7.71 g, 10 h). Head of Demeter facing to left, her hair bound by a net, wearing a double-curved earring and a simple pearl necklace. Rev. METAΠ Ear of barley with a leaf on the right; to right, above the leaf, Φ. BMC 130 (same dies). HN III 1546. Noe 520 (same dies). With a particularly elegant and noble head of Demeter of splendid late classical style. A scarce variety. Scratch on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.

Head of Leukippos to right, wearing Corinthian helmet; to left, lion head to right; below chin, monogram of ΠΑ. Rev. META Barley ear of seven grains, leaf to left; club above leaf; below, AMI. HN Italy 1575. Johnston Class B, 2.1 (same dies). SNG Lockett 409 (same dies). With a powerful head of Leukippos in an attractive late Hellenistic style. Very fine.
