CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 280-228 BC. Obol (Silver, 9 mm, 0.49 g, 9 h). Kantharos, flanked by two stars below. Rev. Kantharos, flanked by two stars below. HN III 1076. Vlasto 1654 var. Nicely toned; unpublished with stars on the obverse and reverse sides. Very fine.

From the Vineyard Collection, purchased from Coin Galleries in New York City on 19 February 1998, and from an older American collection.

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 272-240 BC. Nomos (Silver, 19.5 mm, 6.44 g, 3 h), struck under the magistrate Kynon. Nude youth riding horse walking to right, raising his right hand to crown the horse's head; below horse, bearded mask of Silenos facing; below right, KY / NΩN; in upper left field, monogram of AP . Rev. TΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos seated astride dolphin to left, holding kantharos in his extended right hand and resting his left on the back of the dolphin. HN III 1031. Vlasto 859 (same dies). SNG ANS 1189. Well struck and clear. Some roughness and minor flatness on the reverse, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

LUCANIA. Herakleia. Circa 390-340 BC. Nomos (Silver, 23.5 mm, 7.60 g, 5 h), c. 350-340. Head of Athena to right, wearing crested helmet ornamented, on the bowl, with griffin; below chin, Σ. Rev. ΗΡΑ-ΚEΙΩΝ (sic!) Nude Herakles, holding his club with his right hand, kneeling to right, grappling with the Nemean lion which attacks him from the right side; EY above exergue line; below, ear of barley to right. HN III 1366 (same reverse die). Franke & Hirmer 255. SNG ANS 50 (same dies). Work 8. Van Keuren 13. A fascinating coin with a remarkable reverse of splendid Classical style. Edge bang, otherwise, good very fine.
