MACEDON. Mende. Circa 460-423 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24.5 mm, 16.18 g, 4 h), c. 430-423. Dionysos, bearded and wearing a decorated himation, holding kantharos in his right hand and letting his left dangle, reclining left on the back of a donkey walking to right; in the exergue, grain of barley. Rev. MEN-ΔA-I-ON around a linear square containing a disc bearing a sixteen-rayed star and with a grape cluster flanked by leaves in each of the four corners; all within shallow incuse square. Noe, Mende 87 (same dies). Gulbenkian 414 (same dies). Kunstfreund, 140 (same dies). A rare, nicely toned and elegant coin. Surface slightly crystallized, otherwise, good very fine.

From a German collection, acquired in the 1990s.
