overview
Estimate: 350 CHF
Hammer Price:  480 CHF
Lot 86

THRACO-MACEDONIAN REGION. Uncertain. Mid - later 5th century BC. Diobol (Silver, 10 mm, 1.03 g, 10 h). Scorpion, shown vertically. Rev. Dolphin swimming right, within a lozenge-shaped incuse square. Rosen 400, SNG Copenhagen 377 and SNG von Aulock 6664 (all as Asia Minor uncertain) and Tzamalis 6 (uncertain Northern Greece). Attractive, lightly toned and struck from very skillfully engraved dies. Extremely fine.

A very curious coin, clearly showing the Greek love for animals: the pairing of a scorpion and a dolphin as coin types is exceptional.
