'Barbarous' imitation of Alexander the Great drachm

Starting Price: 50 CHF
Hammer Price:  260 CHF
Lot 659

KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Drachm (Silver plated bronze, 17 mm, 3.84 g, 9 h), 'barbarous' imitation. Head of youthful Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. ΔΛΕΞΑИΔΙΟΥ Zeus seated left, holding eagle in outstretched right hand, scepter in left; in left field, M; below throne, monogram of AT. Cf. Price B41-3. Very fine.

The course style and misspelling of Alexander's name show this to be what Price calls a 'barbarous' issue. Price distinguished between barbarous and imitative issues, noting that the latter were manufactured with the intent to defraud and are often plated, while the former, also often plated, are mere copies and were produced along the fringes of the Greek world.
