KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 16.80 g, 12 h), struck posthumously, Kalchedon, circa 260-220. Head of youthful Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus seated to left on throne with a high back, holding eagle in his outstretched right hand, and scepter in his left; below Zeus's outstretched hand, monogram of HP above monogram of HA or HΛ; in exergue, grain ear left. Price -, but cf. 936, 936A, and 939. Unrecorded in Price. Lightly toned. Minor die breaks and flatness, otherwise, good very fine.

From an American collection, acquired from Freeman & Sear.

Although attributed to the mint of Kallatis in Thrace by Price, this series of Alexanders is now considered to have been struck at Kalchedon in Bithynia.
