SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 17.18 g, 6 h), struck under Gelon I, 485-479. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and the reins in left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣVRΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ Diademed head of Arethusa to right, her hair bound with a taenia, wearing a pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming to left. Boehringer 183 (V81/R126). Randazzo 350 (same dies). Cf. SNG ANS 56/57 (obverse/reverse dies). Very rare with the legend outside the ring of dolphins. Excellent centering. Reverse slightly rough, otherwise, good very fine.
