overview
Estimate: 1000 CHF
Hammer Price:  1700 CHF
Lot 178

MYSIA. Kyzikos. Circa 550-500 BC. Hekte (Electrum, 10.5 mm, 2.71 g). Youthful male head to left, wearing laurel wreath with blossom at his brow; behind to right, tunny fish swimming downwards. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. BMFA 1431 = Warren 1498. Greenwell 79. Von Fritze 62. Unusually well struck and clear; intriguing and rare. Struck on a slightly tight flan, otherwise, about extremely fine.

Exactly who is depicted on this coin is uncertain: the laurel wreath suggests it ought to be Apollo but the short curls give him a vaguely African look, reminiscent of the billon 1/12 staters from Lesbos (as SNG von Aulock 7715). Who can he be?.
