BYZANTINE SEALS. Stephanos Imperial Spatharios and Chartoularios of the Numera, circa 10th century. Seal or Bulla (Lead, 27 mm, 14.50 g, 12 h). +KE BOHΘEI TΩ CΩ ΔOYΛΩ Patriarchal cross set on base and three steps from which tendrils grow towards each side. Rev. +CTEΦ/ΑΝΩ B'CΠA/Θ' S XAPTOY/Λ ΤΩ NOY/MEPΩN in five lines within circular dotted border. Seemingly unpublished. The title of Chartoularios of the Numeroi is extremely rare to appear in seals. Very fine.

The Numera were small military units (around 200-400 soldiers each) in charge of the security of the imperial palace of Constantinople and the Byzantine capital in general. The battalion of the Teixistes, the ones in charge of the walls of Constantinople were also included in the Numera. The title Chartoularios of the Numera is documented in "De cerimoniis aulae Byzantinae", written by the Emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitos.
