SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Drachm (Silver, 15 mm, 3.77 g, 3 h), struck circa 485-470. Nude horseman riding to right. Rev. ΣYRAKOΣION Head of Arethusa to right, wearing necklace and pearl diadem, her hair tied up in a krobylos that is bound up and falls over the diadem. Boehringer 281 (O130/R194). BMFA 352 (same dies). HGC 2, 1360. Rough, corroded surfaces, otherwise, very fine.

Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and the reins in both; above, Nike flying left to crown the driver; in exergue, ketos to right. Rev. ΣΥRΑΚΟΣ Ι-Ο-Ν Diademed head of Arethusa to right, wearing pendant earring and pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming to right. BMC 72 (same dies). Boehringer 481 (V256/R345). HGC 2, 1311. SNG ANS 149 (same dies). SNG Lloyd 1314 (same obverse die). SNG Munich 1012 (same dies). An attractive example. Minor scratch on obverse, otherwise, very fine.
