Imitating both Arados and Sidon

Starting Price: 50 CHF
Hammer Price:  65 CHF
Lot 457

PHOENICIA. Uncertain. 4th century BC. 1/16 Shekel (Silver, 8 mm, 0.78 g, 6 h). Laureate head of Ba'al-Arwad to right. Rev. Persian king standing right, with left hand grasping lion by the mane and holding knife in right; all within incuse square. Seemingly unpublished and quite interesting. Very fine.

This interesting coin is an imitation combining the head of Ba'al-Arwad, found on fractional issues of Arados, with the type of the Persian king slaying a lion found on coins of Sidon. Mints in both Cilicia and in Philistia copied designs from Phoenician coins, including these types, but seemingly not in this combination.
