SELEUKID KINGS. Antiochos IV Epiphanes, 175-164 BC. Drachm (Silver, 17 mm, 3.95 g, 6 h), Ekbatana. Diademed head of Antiochos IV to right. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ / ΘΕΟΥ ΕΠΙΦΑΝΟΥΣ (retrograde) Apollo, nude, seated left on omphalos, holding an arrow in his right hand and his bow in his left; in left field, indistinct control. HGC 9, 623d. Le Rider, Suse, p. 330, B20, pl. lxiv, 8. SC 1549. Overstruck with the partial legend of the host coin visible in the exergue of the reverse. Quite unusual. Extremely rare, with only three examples known to the SC editors. Very fine.

From a Dutch collection.

The partial legend of the host coin is unclear. The consignor thinks he can read the Greek letters ΘΕΟΥ, but if so they would appear to be retrograde, which does not make sense for this time period and region. Perhaps the undertype is a Parthian or maybe even a Baktrian drachm?
