CILICIA. Holmoi. Circa 440 BC. Stater (Silver, 20 mm, 10.45 g, 3 h). Nude rider sliding off a horse galloping to right, holding the reins with his left hand and a whip in his right, and with both of his legs on the right side of the horse; around, border of dots. Rev. Stern of a galley to left; all within deep circular incuse. Unpublished, without a reverse legend, but see Obolos 13, 2019, 390 for a stater struck from the same dies, but with the city name. Extremely rare. Bold and curiously attractive. Good extremely fine.

While this coin is struck from the same obverse die as all the other extremely rare "Dismounting rider/Galley stern" staters of Holmoi, it is clear that that die was at its freshest when used for this piece. As for the reverse, this must be its first state, because it lacks the legend, ΟΛΜΙ, identifying its issuer; after a small number of coins of this type were struck, the reverse die was recut to include the city name.
